Dirty Pair: Affair on Nolandia

Dirty Pair: Affair on Nolandia

The first Dirty Pair 'movie' also proves to be the most `sub-standard` of the three...

The Dirty Pair, Kei and Yuri, are off to the planet of Ookbari in search of a missing girl, Missinie. During the hunt for Missinie, the Pair track the girl to the mysterious forest known as 'Nolandia'. It is here where a mystery is taken place.

At just barely 55 minutes, This 'movie' can hardly be called a movie, it's more of an `oversized-OAV` episode. Furthermore, the animation can hardly be justified as `movie-quality`.

In fact, the animation is probably the crudest of the three movies, its barely above the quality of the tv series. Also, the animators took great use in 'stock footage'. Apparently, this 'movie' was on a budget, and they were not afraid to show it.

Music wise its a mixed bag, it has a great opening and ending themes to it, but somewhere in the middle its a mix between NES and grand music scale, but never a comfortable medium.

Voice Acting was tough to call. The Japanese version was excellent to hear for the very first time, they seem to be spot on with their roles. The English dub was mix, They retained the actress for Kei, but I was disappointed to find a new dub for Yuri from the OAVs (As the movies were recorded after the OAVs).

Story wise, it's a typical OAV episode, it just didn't have that 'movie scale' to it...the movie pretty much finishes in typical DP fashion.

In closing, my review may be a bit harsh, but I hold a special fondness to Dirty Pair. Its the series that got me hooked on anime in the first place. I remember seeing a few pieces of artwork a BBS back in 1996 (for those who remembers BBSs), and was instantly hooked. I seen this video on VHS with the old Steamline dub back in 96 as well, and it has certainly come a long way from the hands of Carl Macek smile.gif

This is a good episode to fans of the series, but I can't really recommend this movie to newcomers because there just isn't much here to really appeal or bring them into the franchise to want to see more, but if you're a long time fan, you know what to expect, and you can see plenty of it here.

Final Grade...C-
