Comic Party/Comic Party Revolution

Dual Reviews smile.gif

Comic Party: Currently licensed by Right Stuf
Comic Party Revolution: Currently available via fansubs
Both series produced by AquaPlus

Comic Party and Comic Party Revolution has a unique history similar to Kanon. Comic Party started out as a hentai game and then was ported to the dreamcast in a G rated version. From there the 13 episode Comic Party was produced. Going full circle, it was later ported back to the PC, and from there Comic Party Revolution, a 2 episode OAV based off the game was produced.

Comic Party follows the (mis)adventures of Kazuki as he becomes a doujinshi artist. One day him, along with his best friend Mizuki was dragged to THE anime/doujinshi convention Comic Party, with a classmate Taishi. Taishi then convinces Kazuki to start up drawing as a manga artist. Mizuki isn't at all thrilled with the idea, and she likes Kazuki but she doesn't know how to support his newfound 'hobby'. Along the way, you meet a colorful cast of characters that interacts with Kazuki and helps him along the way.

Comic Party Revolution actually has little to do with the TV series, since it is based off the pc game. We're introduced to a new character, and of the two episodes, they are mostly focused on Aya in Ep 1 and Eimi in Ep 2, probably two of the most `under-utilized` characters in the series. In fact people like Mizuki ,Chisa, and Yuu, who were all vital in the TV series, are pretty much regulated to cameos at best in Revolution.

Comic Party TV is really fun to watch, as Kazuki struggles with trying to become a better artist and learning about the trade of convention shows. There is a lot of humor to be found in this series, albeit there is a lot of `in-jokes` to other series such as Kanon and To Heart. Clearly, if you haven't seen some of these series, or others that are referenced, then you're enjoyment may not be as great. Even if you haven't seen these series, you should still be able to appreciate the series as a whole.

Comic Party Revolution is also fun to watch, but don't expect any miracles in terms of story. Ep 1 deals with Aya's inability to sell comics at the summer Comic Party. and Ep 2 involes Eimi as she tries to persuade Kazuki to take her to the beach, all the while she's trying to take prep classes at school.

Overall, both are really fun to watch and a great way to pass the time.

Final Grades: Comic Party B-, Comic Party Revolution C+
